Celty Sturluson profiel

Celty Sturluson (セルティ ストゥルルソン, Seruti Sutoruruson), also known as "The Black Rider" of "The Headless Rider", is a Dullahan from Ireland who came to Japan looking for her stolen head. Her motorcycle is actually a horse in disguise, which she has named Shooter. She has no head and perceives via unknown sensors that are not located on the head. The physical strength she possesses is above human, though not quite on par with Shizuo Heiwajima and Simon Brezhnev. She is also capable of manipulating a shadow-like, durable substance to form objects ranging from gloves to chariots at her will.

Celty lives with Shinra Kishitani and works as an underground transporter. She wears a helmet when she goes out and communicates via a PDA. She enjoys online chatting, televisie and DVDs. Her online screen name is "Setton."

Characteristics
In her early years, it is shown that Celty wore knights armor as she travelled the country side with her head resting on her lap. When she immigrated to japan, she updates her attire to match the times For most of the series, Celty is shown to wear an all black biker jumpsuit with black gloves and shoes. All of her clothing is made from a shadowy substance that materializes around her at her will. She also wears a yellow and blue helmet that vaguely resemble the shape of a cat's head. As far as physical features go, Celty isn't particularly imposing although she does have above average strength. Her head is also shown to have brown hair and green eyes the few times it is shown on screen.

Celty's personality is, ironically, one of the most normal and down to earth compared to most of the other cast. Although she was fairly emotionless in her early life, she has since developed a much meer defined personality as she spent meer time with people. She is generally a confident and optimistic individual although she is not without her insecurities. Chief among these are her concerns about how people will react to her inhuman nature. In the start of the series, Celty tends to avoid most people as they usually react negatively upon realizing she has no head. However, she has recently begun opening up meer to people as she encounters others who are not only accepting of the supernatural (such as with Shizuo of Anri) but seem to revel in it (such as Mikado of Izaya).

Aside from developing a meer human personality, she has also developed a few human interests. She is shown to enjoy watching films and playing videogames but has developed an odd phobia of aliens. Something that has been used for comic relief throughout the series.

Reasoning of her mission:
The reasoning behind her need to find her head is so much of her fear of death. Celty explains in thought that she wants to control the way she lives and ultimately dies. Without her head in her possession, that decision isn't hers to make, which causes her to fear the fact that she is no longer in control of her life. She is also seen explaining in Episode 4 that another reason she desires to reunite with her head is to restore her memories and figure out why she was there in the first place.

Background:
Celty is a dullahan, a creature from Celtic lore who guides souls to the afterlife. Not much is known about her early life. The earliest point in her history that is known is the dag she woke up to find her head was missing. She remembered her name, her abilities, and what she was but not much else. Celty sitll felt a faint connection to her head and used it to travel accross Ireland in pursuit of it. Eventually, her zoek required her to cross the sea to japan and so she stowed away on a ship imbound to the small Island nation. She is eventually discovered door a young Shinra Kishitani who promptly brought this to the attention of his father, Shingen. She changes her horse to a motorcycle.

Celty and Shingen worked out a deal where he would keep Celty's secret while she would allow him to perform a full autopsy. Celty agreed and went through with the procedure but eventually passed out from the pain. Once she arrived in Japan, Celty would continue her zoek while acting as Shinra's caretaker when Shingen was away. As she continued to spend time around humans, it allowed her to devlop meer as a person and cause her to develop close bonds with unique citizens of the city.

Relationships:
Shinra Kishitani:
Shinra first met Celty after spotting her hiding in the cargo hold of a ship he and his father were taking to Japan. At this point in time, What Shinra felt towards her was merely a sense of awe and wonder at such a mysterious creature. Shinra continued to remain interested in Celty as he grew up and this curiosity eventually evolved into love. Celty, on the otherhand, remained indifferent towards Shinra for most of his life and even seemed to find him detestable at times. However, as she spent meer time around humans and developed her emotions, she began to reciprocate Shinra's feelings.

In episode 12, of at the end of Volume 1 of the Light Novels, Shinra displayed his desire to remain with Celty no matter what in that he intentionally kept the location of her head from her because he feared that if she reclaimed it, she would leave him. After all was zei and done, he allowed Celty to punch him after what he did to Mika Harima. Then he punches Celty's helmet off saying that she looks good even though she dosen't have a head.

In Volumes 5 and 6 of the Light Novels, there were several sections called "The Lovey-Dovey Prattles of an Underground Doctor", which were obviously narrated door Shinra. As the titel implies, each and every one of them has Shinra rambling on about something and somehow stearing the subject over to his love of Celty. While he initially starts off talking to himself and even Celty about it, he begins to talk about his feelings towards people who toon up at his house such as Shizuo and Tom in Part 3, and even Shiki in Part 5. In Part 4, Shinra was writing a diary entry about imaginating Celty in many different types of outfits, inclusive of gunslinger outfits and even a sailor outfit.

In a flashback in Volume 8, Shinra was shown to be protective over Celty to the point where he threatened Aoba, who was trying to befriend Celty, with his scalpel beause he sensed Aoba's ulterior motives.

While not nearly as obsessive of single minded in her affection as Shinra is, Celty does genuinely love Shinra. While Shinra's energetic and often overbearing personality can wear her out at times, she also appears to find his cheerful disposition to be comforting as well. When the two finally admit their feelings for one another, Celty becomes less and less preoccupied with searching for her head and thinks meer and meer about her future with Shinra as Shown in volume 4 where, after getting paid for letting Emilia run experiments on her, she thought of buying him a new DVD player. In volume 9, while Shinra is recovering from his injuries inflicted door Kisuke, Celty expresses a thinly contained rage and a strong desire for revenge. It even gets to the point to where she contemplates killing Izaya when she briefly suspects him of being behind the assault.
CONFLICT:
In the beginning, the main conflict in their relationship was their opinions on Celty's head. While Celty wanted to locate her head, and door extension, her memories, at all costs, Shinra repeatedly attempts to disuade her from continuing her search, occasionally disregarding her feelings on the matter. This unsurprisingly caused a few sparks to fly between them and it reaches its peak after Celty realizes Shinra had kept her head's location from her the entire time. The two have since reconciled and, while Celty does still occasionally continue her search, she doesn't feel as much urgency as she did before.

Currently, the only real bron of conflict between the two, as stated in the vorige section, is Shinra's over-obsessiveness towards her. However, considering that Celty has known Shinra since he was child, she developed a tolerance for this long before they even made their relationship official.

Shingen Kishitani:
Celty doesn't have a very favorable opinion of Shinra's father. It has likely been made even worse when it's revealed that Shingen was the one who actually stole Celty's head. Celty considers Shingen to be nothing meer than a creepy old man and doesn't like putting up with him meer than necessary. Likewise, Shingen considers Celty to be a monster as well as an idiot as shown when he objects to her and Shinra's plans to get married as well as when he taunts her when he accidentaly reveals he stole her head.

Emilia Kishitani:
Celty's relationship with Emilia is a lot meer positive than her relationship with Shingen. While she does get slightly annoyed with Emilia at times, it never gets to the point to where they start arguing like with Shingen. There is always a tinge of awkwardness whenever Celty also enjoys taking jobs from Emilia mostly due to the fact that she usually pays very well.

Shizuo Heiwajima:
Celty and Shizuo have been shown to get along very well throughout the series. This most likely due to both of them being incredibly abnormal compared to the average person. Shizuo and Celty would often be seen talking to each other in their spare time and would often confide in each other about their problems and give advice. Shizuo also seems to care about Celty a great deal as shown when he got fired up about how Celty was attacked door the slasher and didn't hesitate to kick down Izaya's door when it was implied that he was somehow behind it.

Izaya Orihara:
Celty doesn't appear to like Izaya in general. She prefers not to deal with him meer than is necessary which is a bit of a problem since many of Celty's jobs come from Izaya in the first place. She always suspects him of being involved with many of the major events that happen in the city and doesn't trust him at all. Izaya considers Celty to be one of many different pawns at his disposal. When he obtains Celty's head, he developes a theory that Dullahans from Celtic mythology are the same as Valkyries from Norse Mythilogy. Since Valkyries only appear in battlefields, Izaya wants to start an all out war in Ikebukuro in an attempt to awaken Celty's powers as a valkyrie and ascend into heaven, if it indeed exists.

Mikado Ryuugamine:
Celty considers Mikado to be a very close friend. This is mostly due to the fact that, even after he saw her true nature, he didn't treat her any differently than anyone else. She is willing to help Mikado at a moments notice and will not hesitate to jump in if things get dicey. However, she respects his position as the founder of the dollars and, if asked, she will refrain from helping if that is what Mikado wishes

Anri Sonohara:
Like Mikado, Celty considers Anri a very close friend. Anri would frequently ask Celty for advice with Saika as well as what she should do during some of the meer tense events during the series such as the gang war with the yellow scarves. In the light novel, after being attacked door Vorona, Celty offered to let Anri stay with her and Shinra until everything calmed down. In volume 2 of the light novels, Anri expresses a vague attraction to Celty, much to Mikado's surprise, but never brings it up again.

Manga with Asexual Characters

So I've been doing some digging to find some asexual manga or characters. Not all of them are canonly asexual, but they have shown signs of possibly being asexual.

One Piece by Oda Eiichiro
  • Enter Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy who defies the standard definition of a pirate. Rather than the popular persona of a wicked, hardened, toothless pirate who ransacks villages for fun, Luffy’s reason for being a pirate is one of pure wonder; the thought of an exciting adventure and meeting new and intriguing people, along with finding One Piece. Following in the footsteps of his childhood hero, Luffy and his crew travel across the Grand Line, experiencing crazy adventures, unveiling dark mysteries and battling strong enemies, all in order to reach One Piece. Luffy has no interest in men or women; his only love is the love for adventure.
Self by Saku Yukizou [NSFW]
  • Self follows the story of a man named Youichi. He has a regular sex life, however he is not at all interested in sex, finding it much like a chore. After picking up a book called "Masturbation" he becomes interested in the concepts that are in it and starts to "experiment" with them. NSFW because lots of sexual content.
Black Cat by Yabuki Kentaro
  • It's about the infamous former assassin Train, better known as Black Cat. After quitting he takes on jobs as a bounty hunter, until his past begins to catch up with him. This manga doesn't deal with anything sex-related, but the main character has shown signs of being asexual. He was always quick to say that his best friend (who is a female) is nothing more than a friend, and that he has no sexual desire for her or anyone else.
Medaka Box by Nishio Ishin
  • Medaka Kurokami is elected as Student Council President her first year of high school. Since she was just elected she was given all of the Student Council's responsibilities. Overwhelmed by all the work, she asks her childhood friend Hitoyoshi Zenkichi for help. This manga isn't really my cup of tea because I feel the characters are over-sexualized, but I've heard at one point in the manga the main character, Medaka, is shown to be openly asexual, not caring for relationships or sex. Her friends eventually accept her asexuality.
Shuuseki Kairo no Himawari by Mihara Mitsukazu [NSFW]
  • Specifically talking about the first short story in this series: Keep Those Condoms Away From Our Kids. A tale about kids that have completely lost their sexual desire. NSFW because of nudity and sex.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun by Tsubaki Izumi
  • Nozaki Umetarou a tall, handsome, and somewhat intimidating high school boy and the object of Sakura Chiyo's affection. However, after Chiyo confesses to Nozaki, he believes that she is just a fan of his popular shoujo manga. One misunderstanding leads to the next and before she knows it Chiyo ends up working for Nozaki and aids him in making monthly girls' romance manga. Even though Nozaki is the creator of such a popular romance manga, he has absolutely no experience with romance and has no attraction towards females or males.
Death Note by Obata Takeshi
  • An overachieving 12th grader, Yagami Light is an aspiring young man who seems destined for success. Unfortunately, his daily habits bore his incredible intelligence--So when a strange black notebook falls from the heavens during his class, it isn't long before he takes it for himself. In his room, he finds, to his horror/fascination, that the Death Note is real, and owned by Ryuk, a Shinigami. Any person's name written in the Death Note will die in 40 seconds without fail. With this supposed gift of God, Light swears upon his grave that he will 'cleanse' the world of the evil and needless people that inhabit it, thus creating a utopia for all. Light has been shown countless times in the manga as manipulative and uncaring for people. He seems to be incapable of loving. The antagonist, L, may also be asexual, expressing a love of sweets more than people.
Durarara!! by Narita Ryohgo
  • Ryuugamine Mikado is a boy who seeks for the exciting life of the big city, who yearns for an irregular life; a hoodlum, a stalker denpa-girl, an informant, a champion fighter, a black-market doctor, and the Headless Rider astride a black motorcycle. But despite how different they are, all of these stories are interconnected by mysterious incidents going on in Ikebukuro: mysterious kidnappings, a pharmaceutical group supposedly performing human experiments, and the mysterious "colorless" gang known as the "Dollars." From then on, the existence of supernatural cases and a gang called the Yellow Turbans will rise to the surface, and Ikebukuro will pushed to the breaking point. One major character in particular stands out as possibly being asexual: Izaya Orihara. In the novel, Izaya states that he is not attracted to any individual.
Beelzebub by Tamura Ryuuhei
  • Oga Tatsumi is a first year in Ishiyama High, a school for delinquents. One day while resting by a river he sees a man drifting along the current. Oga pulls the man to shore, who then splits in two and reveals a baby boy. The child turns out to be the son of the demon king, and Oga was chosen to raise it with help from the baby's demon maid, Hilda. Oga has shown to possibly be asexual; he is shy and tends to avoid becoming involved with romance.
Kuroko no Basket by Fujimaki Tadatoshi
  • Kuroko is a member of Japan's legendary middle school basketball team, "The Generation of Miracles," and, while nobody seems to know about him, the main five players of the team all admit that he is a better player. When he joins the high school basketball team, everyone is surprised to find out that he is small, weak, and easy to miss. What is the secret that makes him so strong, and how will he help his high school team? Kuroko has been shown to be indifferent to romance and sex or unaware of attempts when people try to swoon him, as it is seen whenever Satsuki Mamoi attempts to infatuate him.
La Corda D'Oro by Kure Yuki
  • Every few years, the prestigious Seiso Academy holds a prominent musical competition, and only the very best students at the Academy are allowed to participate. Though all are eligible to apply, only students from the music department actually make it to the competition. Hino Kahoko attends Seiso Academy, though she is in the regular department and knows nearly nothing of music. That is until one day, when she meets a curious little creature who introduces himself as a music fairy by the name of Lili. Lili gives the unwilling Kahoko a magical violin, a violin which anyone is capable of playing. That day, the names of the students who are to participate in the music competition are announced – and Kahoko's on the list! Suddenly Kahoko is thrown into a world of music, where every note counts, and where she must strive to be perfect. One character in particular stands out as possibly being demiromantic: Len Tsukimori. He shows no affection towards anyone until later on in the story, where he develops feelings for Kahoko only after they become very close.
That's all I have for now. I didn't want to mention the obvious Haruhi from Ouran Highschool Host Club and Lelouch from Code Geass, who can also debatably be called asexuals. Black Cat is kind of like those so I dunno, not many people mention it which is why I added it in. The same kind of goes for Medaka Box, however it's more suggested that Medaka is asexual than the other three. If you have any more manga, feel free to add them in!

Light Novel: Durarara!!

Durarara is a show about a magical fairy who rides a motorcycle and saves people. This is both the most literal and least representative description of the show that I could think of.

—Disorganization XIII, Spoiler: The Panel 4

Three "ra"s, by the way.

Ikebukuro, a district of Tokyo. A young man named Mikado Ryugamine has moved there from "the sticks", clueless as to how things work in the big city. Reunited with his childhood friend Masaomi Kida for the first time in years, Mikado is shown the way around town as he tries to adapt to the hectic ways of the busy metropolis and discovers its many dark secrets.

Word on the street is that a headless biker called the Black Rider (a modernized Dullahan from Celtic Mythology) has been riding about committing acts of vigilante justice in a spectacularly violent fashion.

There's a guy who dresses like a bartender with inhuman strength, a shady Knowledge Broker, a genius Back-Alley Doctor, and a conspiracy about a pharmaceutical company involved in human trafficking. Then there's the "Dollars", a mysterious "colorless" gang whose members and activities are shrouded in secrecy.

List of Durarara!! characters

Mikado Ryūgamine (竜ヶ峰 帝人 Ryūgamine Mikado?)

Voiced by: Toshiyuki Toyonaga (Japanese), Darrel Guilbeau (English)

Online Alias: "Tarō Tanaka" (田中 太郎 Tanaka Tarō?)

A first year high school boy who moves to Ikebukuro thanks to encouragement from his best friend, Masaomi Kida. He moved in hopes of having a more exciting life than the one he lived in Saitama. Mikado tries hard to change his image, but has not had any real luck, although he does get up enough courage to become the Class Representative along with Anri Sonohara. Mikado has had moments where he speaks his mind, and Masaomi claims to admire this about him. He is the only remaining creator of the infamous Dollars gang. He seems to be infatuated with Anri, but has never found a chance to tell her. Whenever he is close to confessing, she leaves. Mikado often gets advice from Izaya Orihara, particularly in relation to the Dollars and his need to seek out a life that isn't ordinary. He is the leader of Dollars, and, in the continuing novels, also becomes the temporary leader for the Blue Squares, contracting with Aoba in the sixth novel. In that novel, Mikado reveals his "true self" or "true character," a darker side of who he is. When Kida returns in the eighth novel, Mikado warns him to keep away from his affairs.

Masaomi Kida (紀田 正臣 Kida Masaomi?)

Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano (Japanese), Bryce Papenbrook (English)

Online Alias: "Bakyura" (バキュラ?)

A resident of Ikebukuro and Mikado Ryūgamine's best friend from childhood. He was the one who encouraged Mikado to come to Ikebukuro. He is enthusiastic about picking-up girls, but he seems to fail at it. He was depressed and lonely before Mikado arrived because his girlfriend was kidnapped and injured during a gang war between the Blue Squares and Yellow Scarves, which he led at the time during his middle school years. After Anri is injured during the Slasher incidents and the rising presence of the Dollars, he is forced to become the leader of the Yellow Scarves once more. Because he had once been the 'shogun (leader)' of the Yellow Scarves, he possesses a talent in fighting- it has also been implied that he had taken down countless gangs single handedly during his 'shogun' years. He despises Orihara Izaya for manipulating him when he first formed the Yellow Scarves, but returns to him again for information about the leader of the Dollars and discovers it is Mikado. He leaves Ikebukuro with his ex-girlfriend, Saki Mikajima, during the conflict between the 3 main forces in Ikebukuro. Masaomi has commented on not letting Mikado "go to the dark side", claiming that he has already gone through it. He returns in Volume 7, but fails to face Mikado when he witnesses Mikado confessing to Chikage that he is actually the founder of Dollars - but Chikage doesn't believe this, of course.

Anri Sonohara (園原 杏里 Sonohara Anri?)

Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa (Japanese), Michelle Ruff (English)

Online Alias: "Saika" (罪歌?)/"Singsong"

A spectacled girl who attends the same school as Mikado and Masaomi. She is the class representative along with Mikado. She is rather quiet and timid and seems very close to Kida and Mikado, but she tends to keep to herself. Though she knows Kida and Mikado's feelings for her, she considers herself unable to feel "love" towards either of them. She is somewhat popular, even though she feels uneasy about it. She feels as if she needs to rely on somebody to move on, and thus considers herself a parasite. As a child, Anri was forced to witness her foster mother murder her abusive father with a katana called Saika, later revealed to be a copy of the original. Her inability to love negates Saika's "love" for humans and thus makes Anri able to control the blade. She seems to be a skilled swordswoman, being able to handle Saika with great skill. After defeating Haruna, she gains control over the "Saika-children" that Hora created. After a talk with Celty, she decides to use this ability for the best of the city. Anri also becomes aware of Kida's identity of the leader of the Yellow Scarves, but does not understand why he has taken the position.

Celty Sturluson (セルティ・ストゥルルソン Seruti Sutururuson?)

Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro (Japanese), Kari Wahlgren (English)

Online Alias: "Setton" (セットン?)

The heroine of the series and member of the Dollars. Also known as "The Black Biker" or "The Headless Rider", she is a Dullahan from Ireland who came to Japan looking for her stolen head. Her motorcycle is actually a disguised headless horse called a Cóiste-Bodhar. She has no heart and perceives via unknown sensors that are not located on the head. The physical strength she possesses is above human, though not quite on par with Shizuo Heiwajima. She is also capable of manipulating a shadow-like, durable substance to form objects ranging from gloves to chariots at her will. Celty lives with Shinra Kishitani, and the two are romantically involved. She works as an underground courier. She wears a helmet when she goes out and communicates via a PDA. She enjoys online chatting, television and DVDs. She is one of the minority who knows the creator of the Dollars and that Anri is in control of Saika. Over the course of the series, her relationship with Shinra intensifies; eventually, she says that she is in love with Shinra. She has a habit of punching Shinra in the stomach whenever he talks about his love for her. She tends to get mad when Shinra says she does not need her head. Despite being a supernatural creature, she is afraid of extraterrestrials and has developed a fear of traffic officers as they started pursuing her frequently. Her biggest fear, however, is that if her head is destroyed, the same may happen to her. Unbeknownst to Celty, Izaya Orihara has possession of her head before Kasane stole it and gives it back to its rightful owner. But upon being restored, Celty became amnesic with Shinra deciding to help her regain her memories or make new ones as she attempts to readjust to life in Ikebukuro again. Her name is a reference to Snorri Sturluson, who wrote the Prose Edda, where Valkyries appear. She also appears in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survior 2 Record Breaker as a playable character per downloadable content.[1]

Shizuo Heiwajima (平和島 静雄 Heiwajima Shizuo?)

Voiced by: Daisuke Ono (Japanese), Crispin Freeman (English)

A blonde who is always seen wearing designer sunglasses and a bartender's suit. Although quiet and non-descript for the most part, he easily becomes angered, launching in uncontrollable rages and fighting with incredible strength which leads to broken bones and property damage. Despite this, Shizuo hates violence and wishes for a quiet and peaceful life. Despite his simple and unrefined fighting skills (namely his use of road signs, trash cans, and vending machines as weapons), he is considered to be the strongest fighter in the series. In the novels, Shinra describes Shizuo's ability as the naturally unlimited form of human strength, which he dubs "adrenaline power", that can give people superhuman strength in times of emergency. Because of this, Shizuo was often hospitalised due to the enormous strain on his body. In addition, Shizuo is capable of often superhuman parkour moves, a skill he obtained naturally from years of hunting down Izaya Orihara.

He is also a member of Dollars, although he left the group in Volume 6 after some members of the Dollars resorted to kidnapping (after being given the idea by Izaya) to settle a dispute with a rival gang. Shizuo works as a bodyguard in Ikebukuro for Tom, a debt collector and his senpai, being offered the job after he was fired as a bartender. Tom is one of the few people Shizuo doesn't get angry with, as well as the person who convinced Shizuo to bleach his hair (in order to scare away people who might try to fight him). He close to and incredibly protective of his younger brother, Kasuka, who is a top idol under the show business name Yuuhei Hanejima and will become incredibly angry when strangers mention his name. Shizuo is also the only person who is able to read Kasuka's facial expressions and emotions. He is also a long-time friend of Celty, often having long conversations with her and even working with her on occasion.

Shizuo hates Izaya with a burning passion, becoming enraged at the mere sight of him, though he has stated that he wouldn't mind letting Izaya live as long as he stayed away from Ikebukuro. Before Izaya moved to Shinjuku, it's said that the pair would fight outside Sunshine 60 on a daily basis, only stopping when Izaya escaped or when Simon broke them up and forced them into his restaurant. Although he and Izaya Orihara are on bad terms, Shizuo is actually quite friendly with Izaya's younger sisters, Mairu and Kururi, who aren't afraid of him and may even prefer him to their brother.
His first and last name translates literally, and ironically, into "serene man" and "peaceful island" respectively. He also appears in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survior 2 Record Breaker as a playable character per downloadable content.[1]

Izaya Orihara (折原 臨也 Orihara Izaya?)

Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya (Japanese), Johnny Yong Bosch (English)

Online Alias: "Kanra" (甘楽?) and "Nakura" and "Chrome"

Izaya serves as the series antagonist of Part 1, selling information for his own satisfaction and is usually behind the most relevant events in the series until part II decreases it and instead Kasane Kujiragi becames the antagonist onwards. Izaya often claims to love all humans as a collective (with the exception of Shizuo Heiwajima) and enjoys manipulating people in order to gauge their reactions. These situations often lead to injury and misery, forcing those involved to go to great lengths to rectify the situation or give up entirely. He is a master of parkour, having perfected his technique after years of fighting with Shizuo. He is also quite skilled with his flick-blade, as he is implied to be the only one capable of leaving numerous cuts on Shizuo (and his bartending suit) whenever they fight in the novels. In the anime, he shaves a gang member's head bald without the man noticing it. He is considered to be one of Ikebukuro's strongest men.

In the past, Izaya attended Raira Academy with Shinra, Kadota, and Shizuo (whose life he made miserable since their mutual hateful rivalry began). At the beginning of the series, Izaya suspects that Mikado is the creator of Dollars (and is later proven to be correct) and knows the identities of the leaders of the three main forces in Ikebukuro. As a member of the Dollars, Izaya was also responsible for recruiting many members (unbeknownst to Mikado) and has used his membership as an excuse to secretly keep Celty's head. His motives are not entirely clear, though one of his main goals is to create a gang war in Ikebukuro in order to see if it awakens Celty's sleeping head.

After a leave of absence after the Yellow Scarves arc, Izaya hijacks Kida's handle in order to manipulate Mikado whilst simultaneously using Akane Awakusu in a scheme to having the Awakusu-kai kill off Shizuo. However, he was interrupted after Yodogiri Jinnai stabbed him as a warning for his interference. Upon making a recovery, Izaya assembles a small army composed of Namie Yagiri, Ran Izumii, Mikage Sharaku, Haruna Niekawa, Adabashi Kisuke, Slon, Kine, and the Dragon Zombie gang. At the climax of the events that follow, Izaya injures Vorona to force Shizuo to break his arms before daring Shizuo to kill him in front of multiple witnesses as a final attempt to prove that Shizuo is a monster. But Vorona stabs Izaya at the last second, a stun grenade allowing a gravely wounded Izaya to escape with Celty partially healing him before Manami and Kine get him out of Ikebukuro. Though his fate remains a mystery to the residents of Ikebukuro at the start of Durarara!! SH, many assuming he had a role in the new chain of events, a wheelchair-bound Izaya admits to not be ready yet to return home as he continues his informant activities in another part of Japan. Izaya also appears in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker as a playable character per downloadable content.[1]

In fact, he rather enjoys it when Shizuo makes use of his strength and is amused by the fights between Shizuo and Izaya. He first met Izaya in middle school and has been friends with him ever since. Shinra is well-informed with news of Ikebukuro's underground, such as the location of Celty's head and the sword 'Saika' which allowed Celty's head to be severed from her body. Despite knowing this, he keeps a secret from Celty out of fear that he will lose her if she finds her head, as the head may have a different will than Celty herself. Shinra seems to have the "capacity" to tell what Celty is feeling, much to her surprise since she doesn't have a head to show her emotions. He has a great interest in unexplainable phenomena. His online screen name is revealed to Anri in one of the chat sequences.

Aoba seems to fear Mikado a little, since the incident in Volume 6, where Aoba is stabbed in the hand by a ballpoint pen he gave Mikado when they performed the agreement; Aoba also reveals that he and Izaya have underestimated Mikado and that neither of them fully understand his true character[3] It is revealed in the more recent chapters that in his elementary school years, his older brother Ran Izumi abused him to amuse himself. In return, Aoba set a fire in Ran's apartment for "revenge" and let Ran take the blame when the adults thought the fire started from cigarettes. When their parents divorced, Aoba went to live with his mother and took on her surname, Kuronuma. A few years later, he formed Blue Square and ceded its leadership to Ran.
